VWCA Turner Film Club
The film club was, originally, the idea of Liz Turner after she had joined the VWCA committee in 2012.
Initially, the aim was to show children's films, but the turnouts proved that there was a much greater demand for films aimed at an adult audience.
Running on the last Friday of each month (January through to November), the Film Club proved to be a great success.
Some film showings attracted more than 50 people.
Liz ran the film club, along with her husband Jeff, till she sadly died in late 2016.
The VWCA committee decided to rename the film club in her honour and it became the vaca Turner Film Club.
The club is now co-hosted by Jeff and his friend. Jeremy, who had run the film club for a few years following Liz's death.
Although the film club was closed during the COVID pandemic, when it became possible to return, the club stalwarts showed up to.
Although retired, Jeff now runs a film production company and also acts in short films. Because of his contacts in the industry, the film club can often show a short film before the main feature.
Jeff invites directors, producers and actors to come along to the showing of their short film so that they can answer questions from the audience as well as provide some insight into how and why the film was made.
These sessions have proven to be very popular.
In fact, we once had a film director from India answering questions from the audience while connected to the Community Centre via a Zoom video meeting. Technically challenging, but it worked well.
Due to licensing restrictions, we can not advertise the titles of our film club showings (except in extenuating circumstances) but audience members who are on the film club's mailing list will receive a monthly email telling them what is showing in the current and following month.
